I haven't seen recent retros in hand, but based on pics we get the shape and flatness of some of these newer 12s have been just incredibly bad, even for JB's lowly standards.
I hope they stop playing around with these.

These don't look good with jeans. Sweats/joggers maybe. Shorts - ok.

I've noticed a lot of the 90s shoes don't really translate well to 2020 fashion aesthetics.
